Forget theme parks and guided tours – Primal Planet drops you into a dinosaur-filled wilderness where survival is a daily struggle and a hungry T-Rex is the least of your worries.

This hand-crafted metroidvania blends pixel-art exploration with crafting, combat and a surprisingly personal story, before throwing an alien mystery into the mix.

Developed by Seethingswarm and published by Pretty Soon, it’s now available on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5 for £16.74 on the Xbox Store. It was previously on Nintendo Switch and Steam.

A Family Story In A World Of Dinosaurs

Primal Planet begins with a cave dweller fighting to protect their family after a brutal encounter with a T-Rex. What follows is a journey across a beautiful but dangerous prehistoric world, where the threat of ancient predators gradually gives way to something far stranger: an alien presence with its own secrets.

The pixel-art environments span dense forests, open plains, treacherous mountains and mysterious ocean depths. These different biomes bring their own challenges, with dinosaurs ranging from the towering Apatosaurus to the deadly Carnotaurus sharing the landscape with other threats.

But as you may expect to hear, survival means making the most of whatever nature provides. Gather resources to create weapons, useful tools and healing mixtures, then develop your skills to handle increasingly dangerous encounters.

Outsmart The Bigger Beasts

You’ll have to think too. Charging straight at every dinosaur isn’t necessarily the smartest plan. Crafted weapons, traps, bait and stealth all have a place in combat, allowing you to adapt your approach to different enemies and boss encounters. Sometimes a little cunning is worth more than a big stick – particularly when the creature in front of you has considerably more teeth.

Primal Planet also supports local co-op, with a second player able to join at any time as Sino, a nimble sinosauropteryx. Together, you can tackle puzzles, overcome obstacles and battle enemies, with Sino growing and developing skills throughout the adventure.

A Prehistoric Adventure With Extra Bite

With its mix of metroidvania exploration, survival crafting, dinosaur encounters and sci-fi intrigue, Primal Planet offers more than a simple trip back to the age of reptiles. There’s a family to protect, an alien mystery to unravel and plenty of opportunities to discover that humanity isn’t necessarily at the top of the food chain.

Primal Planet is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5, priced at £16.74 on the Xbox Store, with Xbox Play Anywhere support. Sharpen those tools, keep an eye on the treeline and try not to make eye contact with anything that looks particularly hungry.
