Active Matter has arrived on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5, bringing its particularly dangerous take on extraction-shooter action to consoles.
The game is available for £26.99 as the Standard Edition, with Advanced and Deluxe Editions available for £44.99 and £89.99 respectively. Xbox players also get Play Anywhere support.
This is a rather different sort of battlefield. Active Matter drops operatives into quantum-unstable zones where gravity can behave strangely, reality can fold in on itself and valuable loot is only useful if you can actually get it out alive.

Welcome To The Time Loop
There’s a good reason to be careful in Active Matter. Your operative is trapped in a time loop, repeatedly returning to the same point after death. Breaking that cycle means venturing into unstable zones, finding active matter and somehow making it back to safety with your haul intact.
You can head out alone or with a small squad, searching for active matter clusters, completing contracts and taking down creatures that have been transformed by the mysterious substance. Other players are just as interested in the loot, though, meaning there’s always another potential threat waiting to take everything you’ve collected.
Death has particularly harsh consequences. Weapons and equipment that aren’t stored in a safe container or classed as personal are lost when your character dies during a raid, giving every extraction a genuine sense of risk.
When The Battlefield Stops Making Sense
Active matter isn’t simply valuable because everyone wants it. The substance can bend space and time, with anomalies capable of changing gravitational forces and the topology of the world around you.
There are also strange SCP-inspired objects and creatures altered by active matter to contend with. Even familiar-looking locations can feel distinctly wrong, with environments including a Soviet industrial island, a Central African quarantine zone and a dilapidated North American setting.
Guns, Loot And Syndicate Warfare
While the multiverse might be falling apart, the weaponry is considerably more grounded. Active Matter focuses on real-world military technology and tactics, with operatives able to choose their loadouts before heading into a raid.
Successfully bringing resources home allows you to improve your arsenal and expand your syndicate base, while active matter itself can be used to replicate items originating from other timelines.
The larger conflict also extends beyond individual raids. Syndicates are fighting for control of important active matter sources and the technology surrounding them, adding another layer to the struggle for survival.
Three Editions For Different Levels Of Commitment
The £26.99 Standard Edition comes with 25,000 Credits, 300 Prime, five weapon sets, one weapon modification set, ten equipment sets and six ammunition sets.
For £44.99, the Advanced Edition increases that starting package considerably, adding 60,000 Credits, 1,300 Prime, storage and replicator expansions, additional weapons, equipment and ammunition, along with items including the Bouncer brass knuckles knife and Harpy scout drone recipe.
The £89.99 Deluxe Edition goes further still, with 185,000 Credits, 5,500 Prime, character shells, additional storage expansions, vehicle and robot dog recipes, backup weapons, weapon camouflage and substantially larger equipment and weapon packages.
The Multiverse Is Only Getting Bigger
Active Matter has been in development for several years and is now ready to expand beyond its launch content. Further updates are planned too, with new areas, anomalies, monsters and other additions set to push its unstable multiverse in even stranger directions.
For anyone looking for an extraction shooter where the biggest threat isn’t necessarily the player carrying the biggest gun, Active Matter offers an intriguing proposition. Just getting your loot out is difficult enough – doing so while reality itself is having a bad day could make every successful extraction feel considerably more satisfying.
