Dave the Diver Final DLC Willl be a Subnautica 2 Crossover

Mintrocket is diving into its parent company's pockets (Nexon) for the final Dave the Diver DLC with a crossover with the underworld survival game Subnautica 2.

Following June's In the Jungle DLC, this Dave the Diver DLC will be coming in early 2027 and will feature Dave and Bancho traveling interdimensionally to explore strange waters, make new discoveries, and unlock all sorts of new recipes. The Dave the Diver - Subnautica 2 Content Pack (really, that's what its called, talk to someone at Mintrocket or Nexon if you want to complain) will also have new friends to help for the duo, and feature Subnautica 2's leviathan.

“For our final DLC expansion, we wanted to create something that felt especially meaningful, and a Subnautica collaboration is what players have been asking us about for a long time,” said Jaeho Hwang, Mintrocket Studio Director. “Both games are set underwater, but Subnautica has such a distinct approach to underwater exploration, so working with the Subnautica 2 team gave us a chance to bring a new wave to Dave the Diver experience. We’re really excited for players to see what we’ve been working on, and we hope this collaboration gives them one more fresh and surprising adventure with Dave and his friends, old and new.”

Anthony Gallegos, the creative director of Subnautica 2, also sounded excited when discussing the collaboration, call the DLC a love letter to both Dave the Diver, and the Subnautica universe, and that players were in for a treat. Earlier this year, Subnautica 2 released as the creators of Unknown Worlds and its purchasers in Nexon reached a settlement following an ugly dispute, and the game has since sold over 2 million copies. Of course, that is much less than the first game, and less than Mintrocket's Dave the Diver which reported sales over 5m in 2024, and over 10m total last month.

So what we're seeing here is some corporate synergy of two IPs that share oceanic themes, though very different gameplay, and utilizing it to cross promote both IPs in essence. If both teams really love the experiences the other provides we may additionally see some unique and interesting gameplay additions to Dave the Diver, which had already experimented with recurring bosses at some stages of the game. This also isn't Dave the Diver's first crossover, as we've seen Godzilla, Dredge, and Yakuza all cross over in DLC, with the latter being called the Ichiban's Holiday Content Pack.

Personally, while I enjoyed Dave the Diver a lot, I won't be going back, because earlier this year Mintrocket revealed in a Steam disclosure that they are using generative AI for localization, and Nexon has talked about AI being the future.
