Meteorbyte Studios and Mint Gate Games have announced their card-based survival strategy city-builder roguelike, Toxic Frontier, for PC via Steam.
Players begin each run with a single tile and gradually expand a settlement across irradiated territory. Players can place cards on the hex grid to purify areas and create interactions with surrounding tiles. Each level has a target score that must be reached before the player’s available cards run out.
Players can collect more than 40 cards and add them to the available pool. Tile interactions form a major part of the strategy, as their effects can change depending on nearby cards and other structures. Runs take the surviving community through three separate biomes.
The setting follows people who have spent generations living underground. After stories of the surface become little more than oral history, a group leaves the shelter to reclaim the irradiated wilderness and establish new settlements. Players can choose how their community develops, including using the same toxic forces affecting the surface.
There will be four game modes and two story endings. Steam Deck support has also been confirmed.
