Poppy Playtime Spinoff Escape From Playtime Release Date Announced and It's

Mob Entertainment, the studio behind the mascot horror hit Poppy Playtime, has announced the release date for its upcoming spinoff set in the same universe, Escape From Playtime. You'll be able to play this co-op survival horror with your friends as early as October 21, which is when it'll be released into early access on Steam, where it's currently available for wishlisting.

Since it's an early access game, you'll be able to help with the development of the final version by providing feedback. You also have the chance to see how the game changes from its initial release state. Plus, this is the first time you're able to explore the horrors of Playtime Co. as one of its residents, as you and your friends take the role of Smiling Critters.

What to Look Forward to in Escape From Playtime

Escape From Playtime lets up to four players work together to complete tasks given to them by a mysterious voice that promises to build the toys a home for their loyalty and help. The gameplay is a mix of puzzles and gathering items. Items are hidden around the area of the facility you find yourself in, but gathering them isn't always easy when you have to solve puzzles and also avoid a variety of enemies.

You'll be able to play this co-op survival horror with your friends as early as October 21, which is when it'll be released into early access on Steam, where it's currently available for wishlisting.

As Smiling Critters, you get to explore some of the darkest areas of Playtime Co.'s factory, including the classrooms and testing labs. However, exploration comes with unexpected dangers that you'll need to work together to overcome, which makes the decision regarding when your group should stick together and when it should split up a choice that comes with high stakes.

The areas are procedurally generated, meaning no two runs will be exactly the same. Proximity chat adds an extra layer of difficulty, as you might find yourself separated from your group and have to reunite without the help of vocal communication. On top of that, Smiling Critters are quite small. This lets you climb and hide in locations that wouldn't otherwise be available to you, but it also means that facing dangers head-on isn't going to be easy, or even possible in some situations.

What Early Access will Bring

The goal of early access is to let the players get a feel for the game while also giving the community a chance to shape the game's future. When you first step into Escape From Playtime, you'll find a playable character roster of four Smiling Critters, but there are four more you'll be able to unlock for an early total of eight options. There will only be one starter zone at the beginning, and the enemy lineup includes core enemies from Poppy Playtime, and you may have already spotted Miss Delight lurking around the trailers.

While the available content might look scarce to start with, the plan is to add more zones, characters, and enemies throughout early access, as well as take player feedback into account to help shape what the end product will look like.

Do You Need to Know Poppy Playtime to Play Escape From Playtime?

These games are set in the same universe, and understanding the story of Poppy Playtime will likely help Escape From Playtime make more sense, but you should still be able to enjoy a thrilling gameplay experience with your friends even if you aren't familiar with the in-game universe. Part of the joy of the Poppy Playtime universe and its related games is actually crafting theories about what's happening and what might happen next, both of which the community is amazing at doing.

Even from the trailers and descriptions, I have a number of suspicions about how Escape From Playtime fits into the overall Poppy universe, and for me, part of the joy is playing games and trying to figure out if my theory was correct, or if I was just completely wrong. However, the real highlight for me is a multiplayer horror option that isn't an asymmetrical horror, which I've grown quite tired of playing over the years. I just want to explore in terror with my friends, and I'm hoping to do that when Escape From Playtime releases into early access on October 21.
